Vice Presidential Debate

For your homework tonight you need to watch a portion of the Vice Presidential Debate. You do not have to watch all of it. You just need to watch enough in order to make a valid and coherent post on our class blog ( shanehallfpd.blogspot.com ).

Your post should be on your thoughts on what the two candidates had to say on Foreign Policy. Please do not comment on what they are wearing, only on what they have to say.

When you feel you have watched enough to make a comment please go to our class blog at ( shanehallfpd.blogspot.com ) and look for my post on the debate. Click the comment button at the bottom of my post and leave your comment. After you have posted your comment you need to reply to one of your classmate’s post by clicking on reply under their comment.

You must comment and reply in order to get credit for this homework assignment.

Enjoy!

    2. Yea and then Biden just laughed at him like he has been doing the whole time.

    3. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! Joe Biden is so rude! He can't be quiet to let Ryan talk and when he does he's still either laughing or smiling in a very disrespectful way! Wipe the grin off your face, Biden!

    4. It just bothers me how Joe is being so disrespectful to Ryan every time he is talking by laughing or smiling

    5. Hahah, he's a politician. It's their job to argue and try to get their points across because in the end what they've said and how well they've made their points is what matters.

    6. Aurora this is true but one thing that really helps is staying on the actual topic unlike Biden who keeps on talking about his own stuff and attacking the Romney campaign

      Delete
    7. yes I agree with RoRo(Aurora) it was the same with the presidential debate. they have to be able to get their point across about the given topic bc they have little time. Its a debate so sometimes they will speak over one another to get what they're trying to say through to the people. They also have to keep it under control.

    8. Yes, yes that's quite true Blake. I feel like Biden's just doing all that to make it look like whatever Ryan's saying is absurd and silly. So he can't look like he's agreeing with Ryan of course. I'm not saying i didn't think that his expressions were a little exaggerated and silly at times. I was only explaining why he was sometimes talking over Ryan.

      Delete
    9. We also don't realise that his facial expressions might be on purpose, but overacted. Smiling like that is him trying to get across to people who already believe in the democrats into believing in him more. to people who don't really understand entirely what they're talking about see Biden smile like what Ryan is saying is absurd or off or wrong or doesn't make sense which will make some people believe that especially if they dont really understand all of this politic talk.

  2. I thought that Ryan's point that we should prevent Iran's Nuclear Weapons capability by using effective sanctions and not "watering them down" and preventing the possibility of them attacking us was very true.

    1. I very much agree, I thought it was very scary that Joe Biden seemed to think the whole thing was funny and that the possibility of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon was somewhat of a fairy tale. Our sanctions are not very effective when Russia is undermining them.

    2. YA Biden needs to learn some manners and let others have a chance to talk.

    3. I think Biden keeps trying to "talk" to nations like Iran and Syria(who is being led by someone getting weapons from Russia to murder its people), instead of taking an action against it, whereas Ryan's view is that these things should be prevented either in tough words or by force. Ryan's viewpoint seems a more logical and more effective way of preventing attacks.

    4. We can't do anything. Russia is our ally. We're already on the brink of war with Iraq. We don't need anymore problems so we can't deal with Syria too. If we stand up to Russia, what happens? As a member of the UN we can't tell them what to do.

      Delete
  3. Joe Biden says that Iran doesn't have the weapon to put the uranium into. I think he's underestimating them way too much. Republicans want to have harsh sanctions that may cause war. I'd rather have a war on land than a war with nuclear missiles. If we go to war with Iran, it will be Iran instead of Al Quida. This will make it easier for us. We have powerful allies and like Biden said, Iran is isolated, so if we do go to war I'm positive we can win. IF we go to war when Iran gets the nuclear weapons, there's no telling. These sanctions are our best option. It may contradict some American values, but our main priority should be to keep our people safe.

    1. In contrast, even if Iran had the nuclear capability, that doesn't necessarily mean that they would use it. There are already nations that have nuclear weapons capability but they don't use it. If Iran did use it against us, there would be a HUGE reaction by possibly most of the world and could even result in a WW3

      Delete
    2. And I don't think any country would want a modern nuclear World War 3

      Delete
    3. It's very hard to put "harsh" sanctions into effect when you have Russia selling arms directly to Iran. Iran isn't so isolated as you may think. Also to be in war with Iran would be terrible. Paul Ryan and Joe Biden both agree that war is the last thing we want.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Heyward, if Iran does get nuclear weapons, it will not just be us reacting. The world would be upset as well; I don't think we should rush into a war and risk American soldiers' lives.
      -Caroline Hague

      Delete
    5. A war with Iran will remain a war with Iran. A nuclear war with Iran will be a WW3. No one will join Iran if we're just going to fight on land, BUT if Iran has nuclear power, other (Islamic dominant) countries will join in. There is no denying that one day, there's going to be a BIG war between the United Nations and the Islamic countries.

      Delete
    6. But even if we gave let them have nuclear capabilities, that doesn't mean that they would make it into a bomb to drop on us and create a huge war that would envelope the world in nuclear crisis and if we have a land war, there ARE going to be casualties. If we give let them have nuclear power, that doesn't mean they would use it against us.

      Delete
    7. And it doesn't just have to be Islamic countries. North Korea still hates us. You can bet they'll join in. And if they were ever to get nukes, I garauntee you they'll use them! Whatever they're nuclear building department is thought, they are waaaaay behind Iran. North Korea has to import basically everything they need, but Iran has the resources in their own country.

    8. Ok well my computer is messing up and this post was supposed to come right after JT's first post!

Anyway, i agree that Biden is underestimating Iran. If no action is taken, Iran will eventually develop nuclear weapons. However, the purpose of the sanctions is to PREVENT war, not to prevoke a war with a country that would like nothing more than to see us and our allies be wiped off the map. Hopefully the sanctions would cause Iran to back down before they have that chance to cause a widespread war in the middle east.

    9. There is going to be a loss of lives either way. They may not use it immediately but they will use it. If we let them have nukes there will be MORE tension. You have to think, if Iran has access, Al Quida will have access. I'm not saying Iranian government and Al Quida are in cohoots, but Al Quida can be anywhere including a high spot in the Iranian government.

      Delete
    10. But we aren't putting sanctions on North Korea, but we are on Iran. Also, people in other countries with different religions aren't almost savage and will think before they make a huge decision like a World War 3.

      Delete
    11. But you don't know that Nuclear capability will be used to make a bomb to kill, it's NOT the ABSOLUTE outcome. If we start a war, there WILL be casualties.

      Delete
    12. North Korea isn't anywhere near getting a nuclear weapon. That's why we're not as worried as sanctioning them. Iran is hostile. They always have been. We have tension with other countries, but not as much as Iran, but if Iran gets the power, they may not have any choice. The other countries may be threatened into the war. You're not thinking about Al Quida either. Nuclear war may not be absolute outcome, but its the same thing with these sanctions. Youre not positive it'll cause a war. Just more tension.

      Delete
    13. You guys are missing a huge point here. Russia DIRECTLY funds the Iranian arms program. Any sanction we issue, Russia always finds a way around it. For Iran to stop pursuing nuclear weapons, Russia would have to decide that Iran should not be capable of having nuclear weapons.

      Delete
    14. If Iran is sanctioned to the point that they can't feed their people, and their economy is in chaos. Then creating a functional nuclear weapon might have to take the back burner for a while!

      Delete
    15. EVEN if they made a nuke out of their material, we would probably be known. If we allowed them nuclear materials to make a bomb, we are still going to be watching them and seeing what they are doing with it. There are informers and spies in a lot of countries including Iran. EVEN if they were able to get the nuke out of the country without detection, they would have to fly it across the Atlantic to the U.S. where have a defense system for stuff like this like missiles to shoot them out of the sky. When a bomb is known to be made, then we will go over there and attack Iran and get rid of it. Also, there are hostile countries that WE sell arms to so we can make money.

      Delete
    16. Russia is in the UN. That's why the sanctions are being watered down.

      Delete
    17. Ya i think it's funny how Biden would rather wait and let us get attacked by Iran than shut them down before they can get the weapons

      Delete
    18. We don't have a choice though! If the sactions are used, good chance we go to war. If they're not, good chance we go to war. The only difference is that if the sanctions are used then we will go to war on land than going to war with nuclear weapons.

      Delete
  4. But also the point by Biden that this might cause a war which could be worse than a possibly Nuclear armed Iran was also very good.

    1. The risk is not worth taking. We can win a land war that MIGHT be caused, but you never know who can win a nuclear war that might happen in the future. If we don't put down these sanctions, Iran WILL become nuclear. Maybe a war is the only way to prevent this. The Middle East hates us, calling us the "Great Satan." They'll never stop trying to destroy us unless something big happens. These sanctions are our best option although the only thing they may be doing is buying time, but it's better than speeding it up by weakening these sanctions like Biden is saying. OUR MAIN PRIORITY MUST BE THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE OF OUR COUNTRY.

    2. We hate like them just as much and we have Nuclear Weapons, and we don't use them on Iran. Just because a country has the capability doesn't necessarily mean they will use it.

      Delete
    3. We dont use them because we're America and we have freedoms and values. We wont attack countries because we don't like them. The Islamic countries are dominated by a religion that's hostile and violent. I don't know when, but their use of nuclear weapons are eminent.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Heyward, we don't know that they will use the Nuclear Weapons that they get, we know for sure though if we put sanctions on them there will be a lot of trouble, i think taking the risk of them having nuclear weapons and not starting a war is worth it.

      Delete
    5. Giving them nuclear capabilities doesn't mean that anyone will die, an assault on Iran would.

      Delete
    6. The only thing these sanctions will do is buy us time. There will be a war either way sooner or later. The tension is just too much. The country is dominated by their religion. Their religion wants to KILL us. Right now, they don't have the power, but with the nukes, they will. War on land will save more lives than a war with nukes. The risk IS worth it.

    8. You forget about their allies! I'm telling you as soon as they have the power, the other Middle Eastern countries will either join willingly or be threatened into it. Right now, that wont happen because Iran is too weak. And we don't have spies EVERYWHERE. Iran could even have their own Area 51 and we wouldn't know it. Missiles can also be fired by submarines which are MUCH less detectable than just shooting them from their own country. Al Quida is also REALLY good in hiding things. Example: 9/11

      Delete
    9. Their allies don't have nukes, and some of the allies we have do, so we have more power then they do. Also, the nuclear material they have is at a power plant, and I think you underestimate the intelligence that governments know about other countries. Besides, THEY HAVEN'T EVEN MADE A NUKE YET, if they did, other people would know about it. As for 9/11, it was something we weren't even expecting and this is something that we are watching out for.

      Delete
    10. Ya but our detection capabilities have also been raised up really quickly ever since 9/11. It would be way harder for them to get it here now then it would have then. They also don't have any nuclear submarines capable of getting to us.

    11. Turkey has nuclear power and Pakistan has a fleet of 8 subs. I'm not saying they'll join willingly just because they're Islam, but they can still be threatened to join into sort of an Middle Eastern Alliance if a war was to break out. Some of Pakistan's subs can be improved and are designed to be quiet and advanced.Pakistan and North Korea also have nuclear weapons. I admit I was wrong and I'm not entirely aware what our situation with North Korea's weapons are.

  12. I find the way Biden is smiling and laughing at Ryan's comments strange. I'm not sure if it shows Biden is overconfident or if he is trying to put on a calm guise. Ryan seems to be more respectful and calm to me. He showed his respect to Biden's son who is a veteran. Biden seems to be more concerned about the economic and political effects of war while Ryan wants to make a point to terrorists. The economic debate seemed more like a insult contest to each others ideas. It seemed to make them both a little more tense. I liked how Ryan brought up Biden's hometown and how it's unemployment rate has increased since he and Obama came into office. It was a strong point and I didn't think Biden defended himself to well. Very strong points from both sides.

    3. I believe Biden is extremely intelligent but that he either gets his points out badly or is just messing up tonight. I am still neutral on which side to take but I seem to be agreeing more with Ryan's comments. I wouldn't want to go back to war again but if it will truly keep this country safe and all its values then so be it. I believe in our freedom of speech (and opinions). I did not support burning the Koran but I don't feel like you should kill someone over it. If someone were to burn a Bible, I would be extremely upset but not to kill someone. We are told not to kill from it. The attack on 9/11/12 was a terrorist attack but yet I feel like much of the reason was because of the burning of the Koran. It scares me greatly to see how people can premeditate something like that. We live with different beliefs and I believe we should all have our freedom to worship what we please.

    4. I think Biden is on the offensive, in the wrong way. He is very rude and disrespectful to Ryan and it doesn't speek well of his leadership skills. Not to mention that the moderator is having to do a lot of talking (and arguing).

    5. The attack on the US embassy on 9/11/12 was originally said to be caused by a youtube video regarding the burning of a Qur'an. We take action and do not apologize for standing up to our values.

Both candidates want to be able to pull out all American troops from Afghanistan by 2014, but Biden acts as though he just wants to wash his hands of the whole situation. On the other hand, I believe with Ryan: he DOES want to get forces out of Afghanistan, but he wants to make sure the country is stable and will not crumble again. He wants to ensure that Afghanistan will be able to sustain itself before we leave.

Not jump into the fight, but speak harshly instead of softly to stop the mistreatment of people. However, putting our own military at risk is not wise.
